Firefighters, Police Rescue Cat Stuck in Storm Drain

One Portsmouth resident is extremely thankful this Tuesday after firefighters and police helped rescue her cat, Bentley, who was trapped in a storm drain not far from home. 

Firefighters were called Monday by police to a storm drain near Rebels Way in Portsmouth to help rescue a furry rebel himself who managed to become trapped under a storm drain. 

Firefighters helped remove the storm drain, allowing the cat, Bentley, to climb up a board and walk out, much to the relief of his owner. 

"I want to thank you and your firefighters for rescuing Bentley today," wrote Bentley's owner, Joan Jenard, to Portsmouth Fire Chief Michael Cranson.  

"You all showed so much compassion and concern for getting this little guy out of the mess he had gotten himself into. It was a joyous moment when Bentley climbed up that board and walked out - with such relief from him and the onlookers. Lots of clapping.

"Thank you all so very much...Please extend my sincere thanks to your men." 

Portsmouth Fire Captain Jim Sousa, and Firefighters Brian Martin and Ryan Gill responded to Rebels Way in Engine 1. Portsmouth police were also on scene during the rescue.
