RITBA Photographs License Plates for 10-Cent Toll

Leaving your E-ZPass transponder at home or wrapped in foil will not save you from the 10-cent toll on the new Sakonnet River Bridge as some customers are finding out. 

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority's electronic toll system on the new bridge can take a photograph of the vehicle's license plate and bill the E-ZPass customer, reports The Portsmouth Times.

RITBA is still figuring out how to bill those without an E-ZPass account, however, according to the article. RITBA previously stated they are unsure how they will charge drivers who do not pay the 10-cents since the cost of postage exceeds the toll. 

Some customers are already seeing a 10-cent charge on their E-ZPass account. David Darlington, chairman of RITBA, tells The Portsmouth Times customers may remove their license plate number from their E-ZPass account. 

RITBA began open road tolling on Aug. 19 on the Sakonnet River Bridge.
