3 Tornadoes Confirmed In Rhode Island During Weekend Storm

The National Weather Service confirmed three tornadoes, two EF0s and one EF1, during Saturday night's fast-moving storm.

PROVIDENCE, RI — A powerful, fast-moving storm slammed Rhode Island on Saturday night, bringing pounding rain, hail and winds close to 100 mph. Three tornadoes touched down in the state during the storm, the National Weather Service confirmed Sunday night.

The tornadoes were in North Kingstown, Westerly and Foster. Two were EF0s and the third an EF1.

The first tornado started in Plainfield, Connecticut, and moved into Foster, from 4:48 p.m. to 5:02 p.m. Winds peaked at 80 mph, according to NWS, and was about 100 yards across. It had a 6-mile path and was classified EF0.

The second came just a few minutes later, from 4:54 p.m. to 5 p.m. This tornado started in Stonington, Connecticut, before following a 1.35-mile path to Westerly. This tornado was smaller, at just 10 yards across, though winds were higher, peaking at 90 mph. This meant it was classified as an EF1.

The last tornado was in North Kingstown, from 5:18 p.m. to 5:24 p.m. It had a path of 1.5 miles and was 150 yards across. Winds peaked at 80 mph, meaning it was also an EF0.

No injuries or deaths were reported in any of the tornadoes.
