5 THINGS: Volunteer For A Good Cause

Prepare to volunteer now, in advance of the next hurricane or incident, and other things, in today's 5 Things.

Here are the (more than) Five Things for Thursday, December 13, 2012:

Volunteer now and avoid heartbreak later. After Hurricane Sandy, a bunch of people asked me how they could volunteer and help out. Well, if you want to get a jump on the process, volunteers from South Kingstown and Narragansett will be meeting at the Narragansett Community Center on Mumford Road at 6 p.m. These are the volunteers that staff the shelter at South Kingstown High School and other emergency shelters.

CELEBRATIONS! There are a couple of neat events going on tonight:

“Figure skating is an unlikely Olympic event but its good television. It’s sort of a combination of gymnastics and ballet. A little sexy too, which doesn’t hurt.” – Andy Rooney. It’s not quite figure skating, but there is public skate today at the Boss Ice Arena from noon to 2 p.m. For rates and more information, click here.

Oh no! Maybe there seriously aren’t that many events today, given that it’s Saint Lucy's Day. As a result, our events calendar for today is a bit barren. If you’re having an event, please let us know in the comments. Also, make sure it isn’t left out in the future – Submit it via this link (as long as you’re logged into your Patch account).

And then, of course, all of his treasure was found by Nathan Drake in a totally true biography. On this day in 1577, Sir Francis Drake set out from Plymouth on his round-the-world trip.

I like that song you sing about a boy who broke your heart – You know, ALL of them. Happy 23rd birthday to Taylor Swift!
