Johnny's Barkin' Bakery of South Kingstown has earned a top spot on The Daily Meal's list of the best dog bakeries in the country.
According to the American Humane Society, there are more than 78 million dogs in the United States, and 46 percent of American households have at least one Fido in residence. And let's face it: We love our pets. What's more, we love to spoil them. The American Pet Products Association (APPA) estimates that owners will spend $55.5 billion on their animal companions this year alone. So why not spoil them a little bit with some treats made in bakeries that cater especially to them?Â
From a Virginia bakery specializing in "Peanut Butter Pootzers" to an Ohio bakery hand-making "Lollipups," staffers from foodie website, The Daily Meal found America's best bakeries for dogs, and one is right here in South Kingstown!Â
Somehow, the recession hasn't affected how much dough we dish out for our pets. The pet product industry continues to grow, year after year. Top-notch medical care, spa treatments, custom-made doghouses, organic diets -- the luxuries once enjoyed strictly by humans are now literally going to the dogs, and snacks are no exception.

From pizza to pretzels, frosted cookies, peanut butter snacks, and macaroons, there's a fresh-baked canine-friendly version available out there somewhere. Thanks to the Internet, many doggy delicacies we are available for order online, however brick and mortar "dog bakeries" are gaining popularity across the country.Â
Below is a list of the top five dog bakeries in the country, according to The Daily Meal. Venues were chosen and ranked based on creativity, variety of treats, presentation, quality of ingredients, and the curb appeal of their store.Â

#5) Polka Dog Bakery, BostonÂ
This treat boutique received a "Best of Boston" award and is expanding to four locations soon. Unique products include Hand-rolled Dehydrated Cod Skins, Wonder Nuggets, and the hilarious Big Ass Can (5 pounds!) of biscuits.Â
#4) Johnny's Barkin' Bakery, South Kingstown, R.I.Â
Whatever your doggone desire, this Rhode Island store has endless supplies of edible splurges. Treat your best friend to a doggie donut, carrot cake, or a Sammy Squirrel frosted cookie. After just one bite, Fido will be begging for more! Located in South Kingstown's Village at South County Commons, Johnny's is open seven days a week. In addition, two percent of all Johnny's Barkin' Bakery purchases is donated to the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA).Â
Alexandra Miller, owner of Johnny's Barkin' Bakery said she was "giddy with excitement" when a friend told her that she'd earned a coveted spot on The Daily Meals's list. She named the shop in honor of her best friend's dog Johnny, who was tragically killed in a house fire in 2009, but will always be remembered as an important part of her extended family.
"Most of us see our dogs as far more than a pet. They are our companions, children, best friends and confidants," reads the About Us page at johnnysbarkinbakery.com. "With so many choices out there, my goal is to provide only the highest quality products for the special dog in your life. My hope is that Johnny’s Barkin’ Bakery will become the place people go when they want to relax and enjoy some time with their four-legged friends while shopping for all-natural treats and accessories."
