UPDATED: Narragansett Officer Jumps into Water after Person Falls at Hazard Rock

A Narragansett police officer jumped into the water after a person fell, stuck their head and ended up in the water.

NARRAGANSETT, RI—A Narragansett police officer jumped in the water after 64-year-old North Providence man standing on the rocks at the end of Hazard Avenue fell into the water.

Police said that the victim, identified as James Votta, was later pronounced dead at South County Hospital.

Police responded to Hazard Rock at around 6:31 p.m. after a report of a person in the water.

The person reportedly hit their head in the fall before ending up in the water.

The officer entered the water and stayed with the victim until both were pulled out by members of the Narragansett Fire Department’s Marine 1 vessel.

"At this time the incident is still under investigation," police said in a news release. "More information will be distributed as the investigation ensues."
