Recovered Amputee Seal On Display at Mystic

After eight months of rehab and a flipper amputation, Mystic Aquarium is trying to permanently adopt an 8-month-old seal.

The Mystic Aquarium has applied to be the permanent home to an 8-month-old female harbor seal puppy that it helped nurse back to health.

Starting this past Friday, the seal pup is on display at the aquarium while the facility waits for approval of its application to add her to its Pacific Northwest habitat. The seal had to have a fin amputated to save its life.

“We are very pleased with Pup 49’s recovery,” said Mystic Aquarium Veterinarian Dr. Allison Tuttle. “While any surgery comes with risks, the infection was spreading and we knew amputation was her only chance for survival. Our animal care team has done an incredible job treating her over the last seven months and we are confident that she will have a very comfortable and healthy life.”
