SK Police Log: December 8, 2012

South Kingstown Man Charged With Larceny, Receiving Stolen Goods

Patrick John Lepore, 32, of 159 Robinson St., South Kingstown, was arrested at about 1:25 p.m. on Dec. 8 and charged with receiving stolen goods and larceny.

According to police, at about 11:28 a.m. on Dec. 7 they received a report of stolen property at Northup’s Service Station. Police said that employees at the shop reported that metal was missing from the scrap bin.

Police said that based on surveillance footage, the believed a dark-colored Ford Explorer was used in the theft. Police said they pulled over an Explorer in the area as a result, but it showed no signs of being the suspect vehicle.

However, police said that the driver told them that he had seen another Explorer matching his own on Curtis Corner Road. The driver told police that the Explorer did seem low to the ground, as if it had a large amount of scrap metal in it.

According to police, based on security footage obtained from a property on Curtis Corner Road, the Explorer was scene entering the area at about 9 p.m. on Dec. 6. Police said the Explorer can be seen parking at an apartment, and Lepore and another man leaving the car.

Police said that while waiting to question Lepore, they received a call from a salvage yard in North Kingstown. An employee told them that a man in an Explorer had turned in 2,364 pounds of brake rotors and other metal for $387.

According to police, the employee provided a matching license plate number for the Explorer on the morning of Dec. 8. Officers then attempted to locate Lepore, but the owner of the Explorer and a family member of Lepore’s denied knowing his location.

Police said the Explorer was found at a home on Dam Street, where the owner consented to a search. Police said a search revealed leftover pieces of rusted metal in the back of the Explorer.

According to police, when they checked back at Dam Street later in the day, Lepore was at the home. He was arrested without incident, and police said he admitted to taking the scrap metal.

Police said Lepore was processed and then released later that day. He was issued a court date for Jan. 3.

Warrant Arrests

- Charles A. Bennett, 53, of 130 Whitford St., South Kingstown, was arrested at about 10:35 a.m. on Dec. 8. Police said a Fourth Division District Court warrant was out for his arrest.

According to police, an officer familiar with Bennett from previous arrests saw him walking on Main Street near Kenyon Avenue. A background check confirmed that a warrant was out for his arrest, and police said he was arrested without incident.

Police said Bennett was transferred to the ACI at about 11:45 a.m.

- Alexander D. Nieves, 28, of 8 Brodin Drive, Hope Valley, was arrested at about 3:58 p.m. on Dec. 8. Police said a Third Division District Court warrant was out for his arrest.

According to police, Nieves was aware there was a warrant out for his arrest and turned himself in. Police said Nieves did not post bail, and as a result, he was transferred to the ACI at about 5:20 p.m.
