URI Assistant V-Ball Coach Charged With DWI

Brendan Kerr, 26, of 16 Onondega Road, Narragansett, was arrested at about 1:48 a.m. on Nov. 22 and charged with drunken driving. Police said Kerr is an assistant woman’s volleyball coach at the University of Rhode Island.

According to police, they received a report of a single-car crash on Narragansett Avenue East. The accident was reported by a 29-year-old Massachusetts woman.

Police said the driver of the wrecked car – Kerr – claimed to have swerved to avoid hitting a man walking in the middle of the road. Police said Kerr suffered minor cuts and bruises, and refused medical attention.

However, police noted that Kerr smelled strongly of alcohol. The woman reporting the accident said she didn’t notice anyone leaving the scene on foot.

Police asked Kerr to submit to field sobriety tests, which they said he failed. At that point, he was arrested and transported to police headquarters.

During processing, police said Kerr told them he was worried he had suffered another concussion. Police said that rescue personnel were called, and they advised Kerr to seek treatment at South County Hospital, but police said Kerr refused.

According to police, Kerr consented to blood alcohol content breath tests. Police said Kerr’s blood alcohol level tested at .186 at 2:38 a.m., and .193 at 2:39 a.m.
