Letter: Exeter Recallers 'Shot Themselves In The Foot'

Francis P. DiGregorio congratulates Exeter voters for the resounding defeat Saturday of a town council recall effort.

I would like to congratulate and thank the voters of Exeter who overwhelming voted to retain their duly elected town councilors who had the wisdom and courage to pursue a sensible way of administering concealed gun permits. The Town of Exeter had been placed in a perilous situation had the perpetrators of the “Recall Election” been successful in removing a council that has set the standard for efficient, transparent, ethical, and accountable governance. The burden of rescuing the town from this dire threat fell on the sensible and fair-minded citizens of Exeter by turning out at the polls in large numbers. Thankfully and in spite of the busy shopping season and adverse weather conditions the voters of Exeter did turn out to support and retain their besieged council. The concealed gun advocates attempt to stifle sensible gun control and their vindictive vendetta to punish these four councilors did not only fail but was actually counterproductive. This “recall election” was in fact a referendum on the hot-button issue of gun control and this well-funded group clearly demonstrated that they are indeed a vocal but very small minority. Their attempt to intimidate and deceive the voters of Exeter into recalling their duly elected Town Councilors brought to light, an overwhelming, although restrained, support for more effective gun control. These self-proclaimed constitutional scholars and concealed gun advocates have in-fact shot themselves in the foot.

These four town councilors courageously demonstrated that this intimidating and vocal minority can be challenged and decisively beaten. The recall election driven by the gun-rights advocates, not surprisingly to me, morphed into a clear mandate for gun control. Our state legislators should take note of this and step up to the plate and exercise the same wisdom and courage as did these councilors. Now is the time for our state legislators to pass legislation for more comprehensive background checks and effective administration of issuing concealed gun permits. This recall election has made that very clear.
