Fire Destroys 3-Story Home In Portsmouth

The home on Sea Spray Drive collapsed during the fire, Portsmouth fire officials say.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — A massive fire destroyed a three-story home in Portsmouth on Tuesday night, town fire officials said.

Around 7:48 p.m., the Portsmouth Fire Department received several 911 calls about a fire on East Terrace. When firefighters arrived, they found smoke throughout the neighborhood but no fire on East Terrace.

The fire was then found at a home on Sea Spray Drive off Vanderbilt Lane. Fire officials said the home was under construction, and the fire had extended to two exposure homes, causing moderate damage to the exterior of both houses.

Fire officials rang a second alarm, leading to crews from Tiverton, Newport, the Newport Naval Base, Bristol, and Providence to come help.

According to fire officials, no injuries were sustained, and the fire was under control within an hour. The building, however, fully collapsed.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
