How Much Crime Takes Place in Portsmouth?

New statistics were released by the FBI this week.

Five violent crimes were reported in Portsmouth last year, according to according new statistics released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The FBI's annual Uniform Crime Report includes information submitted by local law enforcement agencies. The information is compiled and released to the public in the fall of the year that follows the reported year. Violent crime, as defined by the report, includes murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.

In 2012, Portsmouth reported five aggravated assaults. 

In addition to violent crimes, Portsmouth reported 251 property crimes in 2012. There were 53 burglaries, 188 instances of larceny or theft and 10 motor vehicle thefts.

There were also five instances of arson.
