Infant Formula Recalled In RI Over Contamination With Deadly Bacteria
The infant formulas were recalled over potential Cronobacter sakazakii contamination, the Rhode Island Department of Health said.
RHODE ISLAND — The Perrigo Company has issued a recall of certain lots of Gerber powdered infant formula, the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) said Monday.
Bathes of Gerber Good Start SootheProTM Powdered Infant Formula that were manufactured at the company’s Gateway Eau Claire, Wisconsin facility from Jan. 2 to 18, were part of the recall because of the potential presence of Cronobacter sakazakii.
Cronobacter bacteria can cause life-threatening infections like sepsis or meningitis (an inflammation of the membranes that protect the brain and spine). Symptoms of sepsis and meningitis may include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice (yellow skin and whites of the eyes), grunting breaths, and abnormal movements. Cronobacter infection may also cause bowel damage and may spread through the blood to other parts of the body.
