MA Teen Charged With DUI In 3-Car Portsmouth Crash

Portsmouth police say David Menezes' drunken crash injured six people, including himself.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — A Massachusetts teen was arrested earlier this month after Portsmouth police said he drunkenly caused a three-car crash in town

David Menezes, 18, of Somerset, Massachusetts, was charged with driving under the influence of liquor or drugs resulting in serious bodily injury and reckless driving.

Police said the crash happened around 7:45 p.m. Dec. 2, on West Main Road. Menezes had three other teens in the car with him, according to police.

Police said Menezes was driving north in a Saab and attempted to pass a Honda that was in front of him by veering into the opposite lane. This is when Meneze's car struck a Chevrolet head-on in the area of Mail Coach Road, police said. Police said the Honda was also involved in the crash.

Menezes and his front-seat passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. Police said the two people in the back of the car suffered minor injuries. In total, police said six people were taken to local hospitals.

According to police, Menezes showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol. Police said officers found empty nip bottles and marijuana in the car. Menezes also had empty nips in his pockets, according to police.

Menezes was arraigned by a justice of the peace and was released after posting $5,500 bail, police said. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
