Oh Deer, It's Time to Watch for Antlers in Portsmouth

Deer are being seen more and more along area roads this time of year. Drive carefully!

Oh deer. It's been a slow drive along Burma Road at night lately.

Just last week, a small herd of about 10 to 12 deer were seen on a grassy side of Burma Road near Greene Lane in Middletown. On Tuesday night, three young doe were spotted not far from the Carr Recreational Area.

While deer hunting season has already begun on Prudence Island (Oct. 19 to Jan. 31), deer are appearing more and more along area roadways.

We asked Portsmouth Patch Facebook page users where they've seen deer in Portsmouth lately. Here's what they had to say:

Lisa Sinclair My yard on WMR!

Mary Fitzpatrick Dufour Pheasant Hill Beach is filled with fresh deer prints every morning I notice while walking the dog.

Hope Hutton Peterson I've been on Burma Road at different times of the day & night! They were always everywhere on it! That area is like their personal hang out.

Kimberly Chavous On Cory's lane. I always take Burma road cause I know they'll be there. I love seeing them.

Diane Carol Silvia Right here where I live, Wapping Rd. Both in Portsmouth & Middletown on Wapping Rd

While it's great to see these natural animals out and about, drivers need to be careful. This Monday, a vehicle operated by Elizabeth Camara of Taunton, MA, struck a deer on West Main Road near Raytheon, reports The Portsmouth Times

No injuries were reported. The deer was reportedly not found.

Colleen Murphy HallHope is right I drive it every morning 7-730 dropping a friend off at work and a deer was hit and still alive with the car that got hit by it waiting for the police. People fly down that road. You all need to pay attention while driving...There's deer on Burma road All the time. My same friend use to love driven their motorcycle informed me he won't and doesn't anymore ever since a deer ran into his truck. Be safe and pay attention no matter where you are.

Deer hunting season by shotgun begins on Dec. 7 (except for Prudence Island). Archery and muzzleloader hunting has already begun.
