Multi-Alarm Fire At Rhode Island Power Plant
Firefighters are working to put out a fire at the Providence power plant.
PROVIDENCE, RI — A fire broke out at the power plant on Manchester Street after a transformer failed, according to the fire department.
The fire broke out around 11 a.m. when a transformer exploded, according to the Providence Fire Department. Shortly after, the commanding chief requested a second alarm, bringing 47 more firefighters to help fight the fire. He then asked the state flammable liquid task force to come help. Around 12:30 p.m. the chief requested a third alarm, bringing 59 firefighters to the scene, according to department officials.
Officials are urging residents to stand a safe distance. Drivers should avoid the area.
