RI State Police Citizens Academy Accepting Applications

The six-week program runs once a year and lets residents gain a deeper understanding of police operations.

SCITUATE, RI — People interested in gaining a behind-the-scenes look at what it means to be a state trooper are invited to apply to the six-week Rhode Island State Police Citizens Academy program.

Applications for the six-week program, which will run on a series of Monday nights this fall at state police headquarters, will be open until September 17.

The curriculum covers police training, officer safety, patrol operations, protocols, domestic violence investigations, critical incident and victim assistance, investigative techniques, and more. Participants will learn about K-9s, tasers, the emergency 911 operation center, and about the department's administrative structure.

“The purpose is to strengthen our relationship with the people we serve by fostering better communication and sharing a deeper understanding of the challenges and demands associated with law enforcement,” state police said in a news release.

The Rhode Island State Police Citizens Academy is held once a year. Graduates receive a certificate of completion.
