No More A's or B's — New Smithfield Grading System Based on Numbers
The Smithfield School District will be grading students in kidergarten through grade 5 on a 1-through-4 scale starting this year.

Beginning with the new school year in Smithfield — scheduled to begin on Aug. 27 — students in kindergarten through grade 5 won't be earning A's and B's, and will instead be graded on a 4-point scale.
Asst. Supt. Bridget Morisseau, quoted in a recent Valley Breeze article, said the new grading system is meant to align with the state's new performance-based standards.
A "2" won't necessarily equate to a "C," the Breeze quoted Morisseau as saying, since a "2" means the student is on track to meet expectations.
Morisseau also explained that the new report cards will be issued three times a year, instead of four, the Breeze article noted.
