Smithfield Police are attempting to reunite local home owners with several lawn ornaments after pranksters collected them in front of Gallagher Middle School at about 2:55 a.m. Aug. 15.
Smithfield Officer John Beausoleil was patrolling in the area of the school at 10 Indian Trail Run when he spotted the ornaments, said Smithfield Police Capt. Michael Rheaume.
The officer collected the 23 ornaments and brought them back to the Smithfield Police Station at 215 Pleasant View Ave., where they've been kept in a storage trailer since. Within the last week, Rheaume said they were able to return an angel lawn ornament with a homeowner in Greenville. He said they haven't been able to determine who the rest of the ornaments belong to. "Nor have we found the culprits," Rheaume said.
Some of the ornaments, many of which are fragile, were smashed when they were stolen, Rheaume said. He said such pranks are unusual in Smithfield. "This is the first one we've had in a very long time," he said.
Anyone who recognizes their ornament (or ornaments) in the photos can call the Smithfield Police Department at 401-231-2500 to arrange to pick them up.
