Smithfield Under Flash Flood Watch Today, This Evening

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Smithfield and much of the Southern New England area today through 9 p.m.

Showers and rain bands will continue to move through the area during the afternoon and evening hours.  Rain totals of 1 to 3 inches with isolated amounts of 4 inches are possible as this system pushes through.

Today's forecast, according to the NWS, calls for a high near 77 degrees and showers and the possibility of a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. South winds are expected at about 13 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Todd Manni of the Smithfield EMA warns if you are in areas prone to flooding, be aware of dangerous conditions that can occur with rapidly rising water.  Do not drive through flooded roadways, keep children away from storm drains, and swollen rivers and streams can present hazards to persons using canoes and kayaks.
