How to Cure a Hangover

Tips to help relieve some of the painful symptoms that come along a night of drinking


Although the only real treatment for a hangover is time, there are a few things you can do to help get yourself back in action, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Traditional Medicine

  •  Drink water or fruit juice to rehydrate 
  •  Eat something bland, such as toast.  Bouillon soup can help replace lost salt and potassium. Foods and drinks that contain fructose, such as honey or fruit juice, may help your body burn the alcohol faster. 
  • Take a small dose of over-the counter pain reliever. Be careful with aspirin since it can upset the stomach
  • If you can, sleep it off

Alternative Medicine

Although there is no clear evidence that natural remedies are effective in reducing hangover symptoms, Mayo Clinic says some vitamins and herbs may help your body clear toxins, including:

  • B vitamins
  • Vitamin C
  • Evening primrose oil
  • Milk thistle (Silybum marianum)
  • Globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus)

Preventing a Hangover (for next time)

Obviously, the best way to prevent a hangover is to drink in moderation.  But it might also help to stay away from dark colored drinks, which contain a high volume of congeners and more likely to produce a hangover.

Drinks with a high congener content include:

  • Bourbon
  • Scotch
  • Tequila
  • Brandy
  • Dark-colored beers and beer with high alcohol content
  • Red wine

Other helpful tips

  • eat before you drink. The food slows alcohol absorption, and the less alcohol absorbed into the body.
  • drink water while you drink to stay hydrated 
  • limit yourself to one drink per hour
