"RIFF Goes To The Oscars" Short Film Screening At Sandywoods

Tonight at 7 p.m. at Sandywoods Center for the Arts, check out seven Rhode Island Film Festival short films that have been nominated for the 2013 Best Short Film Oscar.

If you can't make it onto the red carpet at this year's Academy Awards, try settling for the next best thing tonight in Tiverton. Screen seven short films up for Oscar's at tonight's "RIIFF Goes to the Oscars" event at Sandywoods.

Sandywoods Center for the Arts, 43 Muse Way, Tiverton, is once again partnering with our friends at the Rhode Island International Film Festival to host a screening of wonderful films. Tonight, starting at 7 pm, we'll be screening seven short films released in recent years, all of which were shown at past RIIFF film festivals and then went on to either be nominated or shortlisted for the Best Short Film Oscar. 

Here's tonight's lineup:

  • Gone Fishing (2008) - Director: Chris Jones, UK (13 minutes)

The touching story of a boy and old man coming to terms with bereavement through their shared love of fishing, and the legend of Goliath, the biggest pike ever caught.

  • Tanghi Argentini (2006) – Directors: Guido Thys and Anja Daelemans, USA (14 minutes)

An office clerk with a hankering to tango enlists the support of a workplace colleague as he prepares for a date. It's Christmas time and the concept of giving assumes fairy tale proportions in this beguiling modern story.

  • This Way Up (2008) – Directors: Adam Foulkes, Alan Smith, United Kingdom (9 minutes)

A.T. Shank & Son have a bad day at the funeral parlor when a falling boulder flattens their hearse. Emotional and literal pitfalls lie in wait for the odd couple as they make their way cross-country with just a coffin for company. This short animated caper puts the fun back in funeral as their journey and relationship unravel on an epic scale.

  • Kavi (2009)- Director: Gregg Helvey, Mexico (19 minutes)

The story of a young boy who attempts to escape from the brick kiln where he is forced to work as a bonded labor slave in India.

  • Time Freak (2011)- Directors: Andrew Bowler and Gigi Causey, producer (Team Toad) USA (10 minutes)

A neurotic inventor creates a time machine and gets lost traveling around yesterday.

  • Henry (2011) - Director: Yan England, Quebec (21 minutes)

Henry, a great concert pianist, has his life thrown in turmoil the day the love of this life, Maria, disappears mysteriously. He then discovers the inevitable verdict of life.

  • Asad (2012) - Director: Bryan Buckley, USA/Somalia (18 minutes)

A coming of age fable of a Somali boy as he struggles to survive in his war-torn land.
