Update: Suspect Involved in St. Andrews Area Shooting Dead, Deputy Injured

A 24-year-old man who shot and injured a Richland County deputy was killed Tuesday afternoon.

Updated, 11:50 p.m.: A spokesman with the Richland County Sheriff's Department says a person who shot at deputies Tuesday afternoon in the St. Andrews area is dead. 

Authorities said deputies were responding to a domestic violence incident at the Farrington Apartments on Broad River Road when a man involved fired shots at deputies, WLTX reports.

A female deputy, who was wearing her bullet proof vest, was injured when she was hit in the chest. Authorities later identified her as deputy Sheila Aull who has been employeed with the department since 2004.

Deputies returned fire, killing the man who was identified by a sheriff's department spokesman as 24-year-old Adam Jurgen. 

Three schools were placed on lockdown as Richland County deputies searched for the man.

Original story: The area near Broad River and St. Andrews roads was blocked off Tuesday afternoon as Richland County Sheriff's deputies searched for a person who may have shot at a deputy, several media outlets report. 

According to WIS-TV, the person is "down" and a deputy has been injured

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. near the Farrington Way Apartments on Broad River Road, the report said. 

Three schools in the area — Columbia High, Sandel Elementary and Pine Grove Elementary — were placed on lockdown.
