Meeting Street makeover could bring more parking and safety upgrades to West Columbia (wltx.com) — Drivers and pedestrians in West Columbia could soon see major changes on Meeting Street, where a proposal would slim traffic from four lanes to two between State and Ninth streets. The project aims to slow cars, add parking, widen sidewalks, plant 117 trees, and better connect downtown West Columbia with surrounding Columbia-area neighborhoods, pending final approvals.
   

2. DUI advocates push for change after fatal Columbia crash (wistv.com) — DUI advocates are sounding the alarm after a deadly impaired-driving crash in downtown Columbia’s Vista that killed one man and badly injured his girlfriend. With DUI incidents and low conviction rates troubling Richland County, MADD is urging tougher state laws and penalties to better protect Columbia residents.
   

3. City of Columbia holds Swearing-In Ceremony for Mayor and City Council Members (carolinapanorama.com) — Columbia’s mayor and three City Council members have officially begun new four-year terms after a swearing-in ceremony at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. City leaders highlighted recent progress and laid out visions for intentional growth, neighborhood investment, and a more innovative, inclusive future for residents, businesses, and visitors across Columbia.

Buddhist monks arrive in South Carolina on 'Walk for Peace' (wach.com) — Buddhist monks on a multi-state “Walk for Peace” are trekking toward Columbia and are expected to arrive in the city by Saturday. Traveling from Texas toward Washington, D.C., they’ve just crossed into South Carolina and are greeting residents along their route.
   

5. Cut one, get one: Free native trees offered in exchange for Bradford pear removal in South Carolina (wltx.com) — Columbia homeowners can swap up to five removed Bradford pear trees for free native replacements at a March 14 event on Main Street, part of a statewide program. You’ll need to cut the trees yourself, bring photo proof, pre-register, and arrive early since supplies and species choices are limited.
