RichCo Deputy Released from Hospital After Broad River Shootout

Richland County Sheriff Deputy Sheila Aull was shot in the chest Tuesday afternoon during a shootout between police and a man suspected of assaulted a woman on Broad River Road.

Sheila Aull, a Richland County Sheriff's Deputy who was injured during a shootout on Broad River Road, has been released from a local hospital, a sheriff's department spokesman said Wednesday.

Aull, who was wearing a bullet proof vest, was shot in the chest by Adam Jurgen — a man deputies said was involved in a domestic violence incident prior to the shooting that occurred at the Farrington Apartments on Broad River Road Tuesday afternoon.

Jurgen was killed after the deputies returned fire.

Aull was not seriously injured and is at home, a spokesman said.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott released a statement Wednesday, the day after sheriff's deputies were involved in a manhunt for Jurgen in the St. Andrews area.

“We were fortunate in yesterday's shooting because Deputy Aull and the other deputies could have easily lost their life or suffered serious injuries," Lott said. "We do all we can to protect our deputies and community by providing the Deputies with the best equipment and training."

"Yesterday proved the value of both."

Lott said Aull "is sore but doing very well and she will be returning to full duty very soon.”
