Speak Out: Should Employers Be Allowed to Fire Smokers?
Sen. Kevin Bryant introduces bill that could end protection for smokers.

South Carolina is one of 29 states that bar employers from firing – or refusing to hire – employees because they smoke.
But that protection could be a thing of the past if a bill from State Sen. Kevin Bryant, R-Anderson, finds support.
Bryant believes companies should be able to fire employees who use tobacco products, even when they’re off the clock.

“Employers ought to be able to decide who they hire,” Bryant told the Anderson Independent Mail.
Bryant’s bill is set to appear before the Senate’s Labor, Commerce and Industry subcommittee this week.
