DOR Gets $20 Million Loan for Hack-Related Expenses

The ramifications of the Department of Revenue (DOR) cyber-security breach continue to be felt.

On Wednesday, the Department of Revenue received approval for a loan of $20 million to pay costs associated with the breach.

The state signed a $12 million contract with the credit monitoring firm Experian and spent another $1.3 million to notify taxpayers via email and regular mail of procedures being put into place as a result of the hack.

Additonal money will go toward paying a public relations firm, legal firm and computer security firms.

The $20 million loan represents nearly half of the DOR's annual budget. Speaking on Wednesday morning with the State Budget Control Board, Gov. Nikki Haley said she plans to request an appropriation in next year's budget to pay off the loan.
