A 2011 study found that 14 percent of bridges in Dorchester County, 12 percent of bridges in Charleston County and 7.5 percent of bridges in Berkeley County were structurally deficient. There are 76 total structurally deficient bridges in the tricounty area — and nearly 300,000 vehicles roll over those bridges daily. 

The average age of bridges in the U.S. is 42 years old. South Carolina’s average is 39.5 years old.
