📰 News we're reading

• Charleston conservation groups outline preservation goals that would use transportation tax funds (postandcourier.com) — James Island’s Mill Point Park is one of several green spaces already funded through Charleston County’s transportation sales tax, which conservation groups now hope to expand with a new 2026 referendum. Local nonprofits are urging County Council to dedicate a much larger share of any renewed tax to the greenbelt program, aiming to curb sprawl, protect wetlands, and preserve more Sea Islands and rural lands as growth accelerates.

• CHS Museum rebounds with America250 celebration (postandcourier.com) — James Island gets a nod as home to the Charleston Museum’s Dill Sanctuary, where “Community Days” help keep the institution connected to locals even as tourism dips. The museum is leaning into memberships, school programs, and upcoming America250 Revolutionary War exhibits to rebound from a small but notable decline in visitors and tourism dollars.

• Former USC teammates remember Steve Taneyhill (counton2.com) — Former Gamecock quarterback Steve Taneyhill is being remembered by teammates, including James Island native Hank Campbell, for his leadership and swagger on and off the field. Friends recall his role in USC’s 1990s success and later as a high school coach, describing him as a confident competitor and loyal friend after his death from cancer at 52.
