
A former University of South Carolina baseball player and longtime fan, who gained local stardom for passing out candy to fans at Gamecock baseball games, passed away this week.
William "Bill" Camp was 89.
Camp, who was born in Tennessee, played baseball for USC in the late 1940s and early 1950s following a career in the Navy during World War II. He also was a long-time local baseball coach in the Midlands.

Later in life, he became quite a celebrity around USC baseball games, known for having his pockets filled with candy to share with other Gamecock baseball fans. He often showed off his accurate throwing arm by tossing candy to fans around both Sarge Frye Field and then, later, Carolina Stadium.
Camp passed away Sunday in Lexington. Services will be held on Friday at 4 p.m. at North Trenholm Baptist Church in Northeast Columbia.
