Couple Charged with Criminal Domestic Violence

A spat that turned violent lands both in jail, Mauldin Police say.

A fight between a woman and her boyfriend over watching the kids last week landed both in jail with each now facing a criminal domestic violence charge, said a Mauldin Police incident report.

Police noted they arrested both the man and the woman when it was impossible to tell just who had been the "primary aggressor," the report said.

On April 17, police responded to the apartment of 20-year-old Shabazz Dendy at 288 Old Mill Road to find the residence in disarray, with clothing and other items thrown around the apartment, the report said.

Dendy told police that a fight had ensued after she asked Justin Suber, 21, of Simpsonville to watch the children while she visited relatives. When Suber resisted, the report said, an argument ensued and Dendy began throwing Suber's clothing around the apartment. That led Suber to also begin throwing the woman's personal items around the apartment, the report said.

Dendy alleged that Suber grabbed her by the neck, slammed her into a wall, and slapped her, the report said. However, Suber told police that when he began throwing items, it was Dendy who placed her hands around his neck, the report said. Suber said he finally managed to break free, then called police.

Dendy originally told police she placed her hands around Suber's neck when he began throwing items, but later changed her story and said she did so after he first grabbed her by the throat, the report said. Suber, meantime, refused to sign a statement attesting to the events of the incident, the report added.

Unable to determine just who was primarily responsible, police decided to arrest them both on criminal domestic violence charges, the report said. The couple were arrested and booked into the county detention center, where they both were later released on bond.
