Girls, Boys Win Basketball Home Opener

Defeat Greenville

In two entertaining games, the Mauldin girls and boys basketball won their home openers on Friday against Greenville before a large crowd at .

The Lady Mavericks held off a late rally from the Lady Raiders to win 61-58 and move to 2-0 on the year. Mauldin held a 15-point lead at one juncture and appeared to be in command. But Greenville cut the lead to one late in the fourth quarter before Mauldin regained its composure.

Morgan Alexander, as she was on , was the high scorer with 19 points. Junior Kentra Washington had 14 and sophomore Caitland Considine added 12. Tori Whittenberg had a key block down the stretch to preserve the Mauldin lead.

In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Mavericks boys team outlasted the Raider boys, 88-77. The game was a back and forth affair characterized by occasionally sloppy play. Mauldin led for most of the game, but wasn't able to pull away until the final few minutes. The Mavs placed four players in double figures with Quenten Miller's 19 leading the way. C.J. Young had 18, most of which came on the inside. Devon Rice and and Tariq Clement added 12 and 11 respectively.

After a sluggish outing in the opener against Eastside where it scored only 34 points, Mauldin's offense improved significantly and the squad is now 1-1 on the year.

The next game for both the boys and girls is a Monday rematch with Eastside starting with the girls game at 6 p.m.
