UPDATE: Greenville Club President 'Cautiously Optimistic' Boston Marathoners Safe

Marathoner Tim Stewart from Simpsonville said he also believed all fellow Greenville-area runners were OK.

UPDATE, 7:45 p.m. Monday: Tim Stewart, a Boston Marathoner from Simpsonville, reported on Greenville Track Club's Facebook page that he was OK and corroborated the belief of GTC president Michael Burchett below that he believed all Greenville area runners were safe and uninjured from Monday's deadly bomb blasts.

"I don't think any Greenville area runners were in the area when the bombs went off. Eden and I had just left the finish area and were on the subway and are ok. Pls pray for the victims," Stewart said via Facebook.

Original story: With cell phone service in the Boston area suspended in the wake of the bombings that rocked the Boston Marathon on Monday, Greenville Track Club president Michael Burchett told Patch he was "cautiously optimistic" that all the marathoners from the organization were safe.

With fears that the series of bombs might have been detonated by cell phone, cell service in the area has been suspended as a precaution, according to numerous media reports. Burchett said he has had no success in reaching anyone yet.

Burchett said he and others from the club have sent voice mails to runners attempting to determine if they were OK. The club, he said, had upwards of 10 runners in Monday's marathon that he was aware of. At least one club member, Susan Lollis of Simpsonville, and her husband, Jim, were reported safe on the club's Facebook page.

"We're cautiously optimistic everyone's OK," Burchett said. "In the meantime, our hearts and thoughts and prayers go out to everyone that was killed or injured, and their family members."

Burchett based his optimism on the fact the bombs that rocked the city went off after the four-hour mark of the race. "Most of our runners should have been off the course and somewhere else by then," he told Patch.

One person in the Greenville Track Club office was able to speak to an Easley runner who was near the finish line when a bomb detonated. The runner, whom Burchett was unable to identify, said the scene "was complete chaos."
