Langston Students Visited by Afghan and Iraqi War Vet

Discusses challenges facing soldiers in a war zone

On Friday students at got an up close look at an issue they've only seen about TV, when they were visited by Captain Jimmie Holland of the United States Army.

Holland, a Tennessee native and West Point graduate, explained to students some of the challenges he's faced while working as a civil engineer in both Iraq and Afghanistan. As a learning exercise, Holland presented the students with scenarios to work through and solve using a variety of different skills. Students quickly realized solutions were not as simple as they might seem, and that several factors would affect the outcome of their decisions.

Holland's visit was arranged by one of his former mentors, Bobby Black, who teaches Leadership and Community Service at Langston.
