23 Teachers Achieve National Board Certification
Greenville County Schools announces the addition of 23 new National Board Certified (NBC) teachers, one of the teaching profession's most respected achievements. With 628 teachers who have achieved National Board Certification, Greenville County Schools ranks 13th in the nation out of more than 14,000 school districts (based on most recent data) for total number of NBC teachers.

The National Board Certification process allows teachers to evaluate and improve their teaching abilities, resulting in enhanced teaching and learning, and defines the knowledge, skills and accomplishments that symbolize teaching excellence. 2012-13 Register for Kindergarten and First Grade - January 18-20, 2012
Registration for kindergarten and first grade in Greenville County Schools will be held January 18-20, 2012. Children who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2012 must enroll in public or private kindergarten, unless the parent or legal guardian signs a waiver. Any child who will be six years old on or before September 1, 2012 must enroll in first grade. Visit your Greenville County public school January 18-20 to register.
Parents of students who will be attending the new Monarch Elementary School (opening August 2012) should register their children at Rudolph G. Gordon Elementary School, located at 1507 Scuffletown Road, Simpsonville, 29681.
To enroll a new student in kindergarten or first grade, a parent must present the following at registration:
- State-issued Birth Certificate
- Properly Completed Immunization Certificate or Religious Exemption Certificate
- Two Forms of Proof of Residence (two documents required such as a current utility bill or copy of lease agreement)

Action Items
Revision of Policy JCDAG - Harrassment, Intimidation and Bullying - After two failed amendments, approved the motion from the Committee of the Whole to approve Board Policy JCDAG as presented. The policy merges the student sexual harassment policy with the bullying, intimidation, and harassment policy, making it easier for parents and students to navigate.
Revision of Policy JA - Goals and Objectives - Approved the motion from the Committee of the Whole to approve revisions to Board Policy JA. As a companion policy to the policy JCDAG, this policy includes necessary language identifying the District employees who serve as legal designees in different areas of the law.
Deletion of Policy JCEC - Rights and Responsibilities: Complaints and Grievances - Approved the motion from the Committee of the Whole to approve the deletion of Board Policy JCEC. The policy is being deleted because its content is addressed in other policies.
Deletion of Policy JCA - Student Sexual Discrimination - Approved the motion from the Committee of the Whole to approve the deletion of Board Policy JCA. The content contained in Board Policy JCA is being incorporated in the new Board Policy JCDAG.
Audit of Northwood Middle School (Executive Session) - Approved the motion from Internal Auditing Services to accept the audit of Northwood Middle School. The audit was performed to review and trace students' payments and orders of physical education (PE) uniforms to appropriate receipt and banking documentation.
Operations and Maintenance Internal Control Review - Approved the motion from Internal Auditing Services to accept the Operations and Maintenance Department Internal Control Review. The audit was performed to review the internal controls and management reports related to the District's Operations and Maintenance Department to determine their adequacy.
Audit of Fifth Day Charter School Enrollment - Approved the motion from Internal Auditing Services to accept the audit of the Fifth Day Charter School Enrollment. The audit was performed to ensure the accuracy of student enrollment information as of the fifth day for Greer Middle College Charter High School, Langston Charter Middle School, Lead Academy, and Legacy Charter School.
Dedication and Conveyance of Sanitary Sewer Line and Easement at Monarch Elementary - Approved the motion from the Committee of the Whole to approve the dedication and conveyance of the sanitary sewer line and easement a Monarch Elementary School to Metropolitan Sewer Sub District. This conveyance will include an easement for Metropolitan Sewer to operate, repair, replace, and utilize the lines and system.
Right of Way Easement with Duke Energy at Sara Collins - Approved the motion from the Committee of the Whole to approve the right-of-way easement to Duke Energy at Sara Collins Elementary/Washington Center for the purpose of relocating and maintaining power lines. The easement permits Duke Energy to enter property to inspect, maintain, and operate lines within the right-of-way.
Easement with AT&T at Mauldin High - Approved the motion from the Committee of the Whole to approve an AT&T request for a 5-foot wide permanent right-of-way easement on E. Butler Road and Corn Road on the Mauldin High School property. AT&T will pay the school district $1,500 for the strip of property needed for the easement.
Acquisition of Property - Approved the motion from the Administration to approve the purchase of 26.818 acres for the construction of a new middle school to provide relief for overcrowding at Beck, Bryson, and Hillcrest Middle Schools. The purchase price for the new site, located at Millennium Boulevard, is $2,011,350. The new site is more suitable for the construction of the new middle school than the previously planned Old J. L. Mann site.

Internal Auditing Services' Project Status Report - The report was presented as information.
Board Committee Reports - Mrs. Rohleder presented a report from the SCSBA Delegate Assembly meeting and distributed new Delegate Assembly books which contain two new resolutions. Mrs. Reece presented a report from the Advocacy Committee which included the approval of a recommendation from the committee to submit a letter to the Government Accounting Standards Board asking them to re-evaluate their position on State retirement. Also approved was a recommendation from the committee to submit a letter to the Greenville County Legislative Delegation regarding charter school students' participation in extra-curricular activities at their home-based school.
