Mauldin won the opening coin toss and marched down the field for their first score. The score came on a fluke play as Reggie Lomax fumbled falling into the end zone, but the loose ball was pounced on by lineman Joey Lysek.* The ease with which Mauldin moved the ball would continue for the rest of the night.
The defense played well also, allowing only one touchdown and it came on a deflection that fell into Rams receiver's hands.
