In the preparation leading up to Friday night’s game Mauldin Coach Doug Shaw told his team that Boiling Springs was much better than their 2-2 record indicated. He was right as the Bulldogs 41-28 victory in Spartanburg County proved.
Boiling Springs had the upper hand on both sides of the ball. Defensively, they pressured Mavericks quarterback Dre Massey throughout the game, causing him to commit mistakes that led to turnovers. Boiling Springs also kept the explosive Reggie Lomax in check, forcing him to earn every yard.
“We couldn’t get them blocked when we needed to,” Shaw said of the Boiling Springs defense.

On the other side of the ball, the Mavericks had no answer for Bulldogs running back Deon Burgess, who repeatedly broke tackles and ripped off long runs. Burgess’ last touchdown was particularly spectacular. He appeared trapped in the backfield and Mauldin had already begun celebrating the possibility that they were about to get the ball back after a Boiling Springs punt. Except that Burgess wasn’t actually down and regained his balance to dash 50-plus yards for the clinching score.

Mistakes and missed tackles aside, that wasn’t what bothered Shaw after the game. “The mistakes we made are correctable,” the Mavs coach said. “But we need to play with emotion right from the start. We can’t wait until we fall behind.”
Mauldin will have to be at their peak next week. They hit the road to play defending 4A state champ Byrnes.
