Mavs Open Football Season with First Practice

Two-a-days start on Monday

Mauldin High School kicked off the 2011 football season this morning with its first summer practice session.

Mavs coach Doug Shaw reports approximately 85-90 players out for the team, 65 of whom will dress for varsity.

After a week off, this morning the players were out on the field for the first time together and their enthusiasm was evident.  “The kids are excited about being out here,” Shaw said.

While there is much to learn before the opener against Hillcrest, Shaw is taking things one step at a time. “We don’t want to overwhelm them with info at this point,” Shaw said.

The big change from last year will be defensive. The Mavs ran a 3-5 front and this year they will run a 4-2.

“We have some decent speed,” Shaw said. “So we want to take advantage of that.”

On Monday, two-a-day practices begin and the players will be in full pads by the end of the week.
