Mavs Ready for Final Tune-up at Tonight's Jamboree

Will take on Wren in 10-team event

The Mauldin Mavericks high-powered offense will get its last tune-up before the start of the regular season tonight at the Mauldin Jamboree.

The ten-team event was originally scheduled for Mauldin High but has been moved to Hillcrest because new turf that’s been put in hasn’t taken as quickly as hoped. The field is expected to be ready for next Friday’s opener.

Mavs coach Doug Shaw said his squad is coming off a good performance in a scrimmage against Belton-Honea Path on Tuesday.

According to Shaw, the offense played well again, as they had in last Saturday’s Jamboree against Chapman. Sophomore quarterback Dre Massey continued to impress Shaw.

“He stands in the pocket and that’s real hard to teach a young quarterback,” Shaw said.

Shaw added that the Mavs’ defense gave up some points, but did have some bright spots. “We had some back-ups step in and do a nice job,” he said. “We made some mistakes, but it’s important to remember they’re high school kids and we want to make sure they keep coming back when mistakes happen.”

Some of the Mavericks who have been injured are gradually getting healthier and Shaw plans on working them into tonight’s contest. “We want them to play some before next week, but they won’t play a whole lot,” he said.

Tonight’s opponent, Wren, is moving from AAAA to AAA classification and the Anderson County School runs a spread offense much like Mauldin. Considering the Mavs’ defense sees the spread every day in practice, Shaw is hoping for a better performance on that side of the ball.

At this point in the season Shaw is pleased with his team’s progress. “We have to fine-tune things before with our second units and special teams,” he said. “We just want to keep working to get everyone on the same page.”

Kickoff is tonight at 6. Here’s a look at the full schedule:
