Mavs Take District Baseball Championship

Mauldin High beat Northwestern to advance to the Upper State AAAA playoffs.

Mauldin High beat Northwestern 6-1 on Wednesday to claim the Class AAAA District III championship and a berth in the opening round of the Upper State playoffs this weekend.

Mauldin (17-10, 10-4) will play either Boiling Springs or Blythewood on Saturday.

The Mavs clinched the win with a sixth-inning two-run blast by Ramon Osuna, who also hit two homers in the Mavs' win against Northwestern this past Saturday.

“On the bus ride home Saturday we gave him the nickname Ramon the Trojan killer,” Mauldin coach Jim Maciejewski told The Greenville News. “He likes to hit against the purple and yellow, I guess.”

Despite difficulties in the first two innings, Mauldin starting pitcher Daniel Johnson worked his way out of jams to claim the win.

“We had some good opportunities,” Northwestern coach Mitch Walters told the paper. “We made some mistakes, and you can’t do that against a good team like Mauldin.”
