MHS NJROTC and Robotics Teams Continue to Excel

Perform well at competitions in NC and GA.

Fresh off its appearance in the National Championships last month, the Mauldin High JNROTC orienteering team defended its No. 10 national ranking in a competion against other Upstate schools that was held in North Carolina. In the three areas of competion the squad finished first in two and second in one, while taking home the first place overall trophy.

Some individual results:

Dalton Skutka, a freshman, took first place in the novice course, which is approximately 4-5k through steep terrain and dense woods.

Alex Brizendine, also a freshman, finished in second place on the 5 mile advanced course.

John Schmidt, Tyler Griffin, Shea Tanner, Dakota Skutka were the first place score team. This team found all the markers and get back in the shortest time. They finished in 55 minutes to beat the second place team (Wren) by over 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, the 1319 Robotics Team of Mauldin High, nicknamed "The Flash," attended the Peachtree Regional in Duluth, GA. The team brought home the Finalist trophy for their second place finish in a field of 60 teams drawn from seven states. The team was also awarded the team the Delphi Excellence in Engineering Award and the L Industrial Safety Award.

The JV version of the Robotics Team, called the FIRST Tech Challenge team 5201, finished second in a competition at SC State. They were led by David Allred. Freshmen Sean Upshaw and Matthew Brown took part in their first competition.
