Mistakes Sink Mavericks in 35-21 Homecoming Loss to Mann

Even with a 4-0 start, Mauldin Coach Doug Shaw insisted that his team was still young and would make plenty of mistakes. Unfortunately for Shaw, the last three weeks have proved him right.

Friday’s 35-21 loss against rival JL Mann was the latest example of the team’s youthfulness, but perhaps the most disappointing since it was Homecoming for the Mavericks.

“A missed tackle here, a dropped pass there, a penalty, a blown coverage—those things cost you ballgames and they cost us tonight,” Shaw said. “But those are the kind of mistakes a young team makes and we’re a young team.”

After a couple of sub-par weeks, Mavs running back Reggie Lomax returned to form, scoring all three of his team’s touchdowns. One came on an electrifying 67-yard pass from quarterback Dre Massey.

Next week Mauldin will host Dorman, who lost to Boiling Springs 31-28 on Friday.

“We beat them 14-12 the last time they were here,” Shaw said of Dorman. “We’re going to stay positive with our kids. That’s our job as coaches and we’ll get them ready.”

• Mann takes a knee and its a final JL Mann 35, Mauldin 21.
• Mann intercepts Massey in the end zone and that will do it.
• Mavs recover the onside kick and begin at the Patriots 43.
• Lomax runs it in from 5 yards out. Kick good and it's 35-21 Mann with 2:05 to go in the ballgame.
• Fans clearing out and heading to homecoming festivities at the high school cafeteria.
• Mavs get a stop and start on their own 20.
• Mavs trying to answer but a Massey pass is intercepted. And Mann takes over at their own 37.
• Touchdown Mann on a two yard touchdown run. 35-14 with 8:32 left.
• Another long Mann run and it's first and goal at the 7.
• Mann starts on their 48 after the punt.
• Mavs go three and out and will punt. Crowd a bit deflated after that Mann touchdown.
• Injury on the last play which caused a delay. Mann's extra point is good and it's 28-14.
• Mann runs it in from 8 yards out and regain control.
• 3rd quarter over. Mann starts the 4th on the Mauldin 20.
• Mann responds with a big play of their own. 64 yard pass play and they have it at the Mauldin 16.
• Mavs get the big play they need Massey to Lomax catch and run of 73 yards. 21-14 with 1:08 left.
• Mauldin starts on their own 20.
• Mann converts a 3rd and 6 and one play later they punch it in from a yard out. 21-7 with 2:19 left in the 3rd.
• Had several dead ball penalties tonight. Which is to be expected in a rivalry game.
• A long Mann run and they have it inside the Mauldin 10. But a penalty moves it out to the 25.
• Mauldin comes up short on a 4th and 4 and Mann takes over on their own 28.
• Mavs start on their own 21.
• Mavs have the momentum now. They get another three and out.
• Lomax turns the corner, into the secondary and into the end zone. Kick is good and we have a ballgame. 14-7 Mann with 9:22 left in the 3rd.
• Mavs came out of the locker room with a lot of energy. Have it now at the 16.
• Mavs get a three and out, force the punt and a nice Jordan Hallums return puts it at the Mann 18. But a penalty moves it back to the 33.
• Mann will receive to start the second half.
• Mavs going to try a 50 yard field goal and it's no good. It's halftime and JL Mann leads 14-0.
• Mavs get a big play. An interception stops the Mann drive and Mauldin will try to make something happen with less than a minute left.
• Patriots putting first downs together with the running game. First down at the Mauldin 41 with 2:15 left.
• The Mavs will come away empty as Mann picks off Dre Massey and will start at their own 12 with the clock nearing 6 minutes in the 2nd.
• Mavs with a first and goal at the 9.
• Mavs trying to mount a drive. Have a first down at the Patriots 29.
• They get it on a long run from Lomax but...it's called back on a holding penalty.
• Mavs stop the Patriots and force a punt. They take over on the 33. They need a big play to turn the momentum.
• 1st quarter in the books. 14-0 JL Mann.
• Mavs have a 4th and 3 but can't convert. Mann takes over on the 25.
• Mavs into Mann territory at the 25.
• Mavs defense steps up to force a pint and they'll start at the 13.
• Mavs fumble and the Patriots pounce on it on their 46.
• Starting on their 20, Mauldin gets a much-needed big play from Reggie Lomax on a 30 yard run.
• A Mann receiver gets behind coverage and 67 yards later its 14-0 Patriots.
• Mavs can't advance and punt it away. Patriots start at their own 33.
• Mauldin will take over on the 26.
• Mann runs it in from 7 yards out. Kick good, 7-0 Mann with 8:34 left in the first.
• Mann touchdown...called back due to a holding penalty.
• Mavs first play is a deflection and Patriots interception. Mann ball on the Mavs 22.
• Mauldin will receive to start things off.
• Mauldin and JL Mann both come into tonight's after getting routed last week. Mauldin by Byrnes (56-7) and Mann by Boiling Springs (38-0).
