With the Score orienteering championship, and a the third place overall finish Mauldin's orienteering team qualifies to compete in the National JROTC orienteering championships to be held in Florida in the spring.
According to Naval Science Instructor, Cliff Bailey, orienteering is similar to a cross country race through the woods with a map and a compass. Runners are trying to find a series of designated markers along the course and complete the course as quickly as possible while finding all the markers. Score orienteering is working as a team trying to find all the markers in the fastest possible time.
