
Captain Jimmie Holland of the United States Army Visits Langston – Langston students got a better understanding of the challenges of soldiers in a war zone when they were visited by Captain Jimmie Holland of the United States Army. Captain Holland is a Tennessee native and a West Point graduate and has served tours in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Langston Leadership and Community Service Teacher, Bobby Black, was a former mentor to Captain Holland.
Visit by Author and Stave Re-enactor Kitty Wilson-Evans – Langston was honored to have celebrated author and storyteller Kitty Wilson-Evans visit the school on Friday, February 17 to speak to all the eighth grade classes about the issues of slavery and slave life. She performed a first person narrative of a slave and then answered students’ questions. Kitty Wilson-Evans is the interpreter of African-American history at the Historic Brattonsville Plantation in York County.
Charter School Speaker Available - Lisa Stevens, Langston Charter Middle School Board Chairman, is available to speak to civic and community groups about charter schools and the success that Langston has been able to give Greenville County students through the charter school model. Upcoming Deadline for DC Trip – The $200 deposit for the eighth grade Washington DC trip next school year is due to the school office by March 16.
Registration Now Open for Langston Summer Science Fun Classes – Langston will offer science classes this summer for rising fourth – eighth graders. Lego Robotics Level 1, Lego Sumo, Beginning Rockets, and Insect Collecting will be offered. Cost is $90 for Lego Robotics Level 1, Lego Sumo, and Beginning Rockets; and $80 for Insect Collecting; plus a $25 registration fee. Class size is limited and is open to Langston students and students from other schools. Registration Now Open for Langston Study Skills Workshop – Registration is now underway for Study Skills – Preparing for Middle School workshop offered to rising 6th graders. The purpose of this workshop is to give rising 6th graders the skills and confidence they need to be successful in middle school. Sessions will be held July 16 –20, July 23 -27, and July 30 – August 3 with morning and afternoon sessions available. The cost is $100 and a $25 registration fee.
