While fireworks are beautiful to humans, they can be very frightening for your four-legged friends.

So before things go boom in the night, make sure you have a plan to keep your pet safe and secure.

Jenny Landreth, a veterinary assistant at , said there are a few things pet owners can do to keep their pets safe and calm during fireworks.

"Most pets like being in their own area," Landreth said. "A kennel covered in a dark sheet will make them feel more secure."

Landreth also suggested turning on a radio or television in the room to help drown out the noise.

Landreth said that there are also supplements that can be given to dogs to help them stay calm. But Landreth said if pet owners are still worried their pets won't be happy when the fireworks go off, they should consider boarding them overnight.

The ASPCA also provides a few tips to keep pets safe:

• Make sure your pet has identification tag or microchip, just in case the fireworks spook them and they run away.
• Don't leave alcoholic drinks unattended, as it could poison your pet.
• Don't apply sunscreen or bug repellant to animals, unless the product is made specifically for pets.
• Keep matches and lighter fluids away from pets.
• While it's tempting to give Fido a treat from the grill, people food can be hard for pets to digest.
• Do not put glow sticks on your pets or allow them to play with them.
• Be careful not to put citronella candles or insect oils in places where a curious pet might get hurt.
