Rebels overpower a young Mavericks offense

On Mauldin's first posssession of the game last night in Duncan versus Byrnes quarterback Dre Massey has one of his passes intercepted and returned for a touchdown. And things got worse from there in a 56-7 loss, dropping the Mavericks to 4-2 on the year and giving them their second straight loss.

The fact that Mauldin started in the face of the strong wind didn't help against a Rebels team that was bigger, faster, and stronger.

"They are a very good team and you can't shoot yourselves in the foot like we did early and give them momentum," Mavericks Coach Doug Shaw.

"There is only so much you can do in practice to simulate a game," Shaw said. "Our guys found that out tonight, but we just have to keep working and get better at what we do."

Despite the lopsided score, Mauldin's enthusiasm level was high, which was point of emphasis for Shaw in practice this week. "As disappointing as the loss is our kids continued to play hard. My coaching staff and I pride ourselves on that. Sometimes it's a lot bigger than football.
