Police: Man Charged With Assaulting Wife

Heated argument turned physical, police report says.

A Mauldin man faces a criminal domestic violence-simple assault charge after he allegedly struck his wife in the midst of an argument, a Mauldin Police incident report said.

The victim told police that her husband, identified as 34-year-old Charles Underwood, struck her in the face with his open palm and then slammed a door closed while her hand was in the doorjamb, bruising and hurting her hand, the report said.

The husband said the fight started after he attempted to stop his wife from leaving their home with their daughter. Underwood denied any type of physical altercation with his wife.

Though the wife declined to press charges, her story and injury were enough to prompt police to arrest Underwood. He was transported to the county detention center and later released.
