School Notes: Langston Charter Middle School

Annual meeting will feature distinguished speaker, and more important news and notes from Langston Charter.

Palmetto Gold Awards - Langston was awarded as a Palmetto Gold winner for overall academic performance award and closing the gap award.  The awards were named by the state Education Oversight Committee. 

Langston Annual Meeting - The Annual Meeting of Langston Charter Middle School is Tuesday, April 30 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Woodruff Road Christian Church.

Mary Ann Pires, who was awarded the Young American Medal for Service in 1962 by then-President John F. Kennedy, will be the guest speaker. Pires was selected from among candidates from all fifty states to receive this medal and after hearing the list of Pires’ accomplishments, President Kennedy suggested that the high school senior might someday be the country’s first female President.

Pires now lives in Greenville and serves on the boards of the Greenville Symphony and the Greenville Area Development Corp, as well as volunteering at her church, St Anthony of Padua.  

The meeting agenda will also include presentations of Student Leadership Awards, a summation of the state of the school, and an introduction of next year’s school board.

Rising sixth Graders Meet and Greet at Stevie B’s Spirit Night – Langston’s Spirit Night is Thursday, April 25 at Stevi B's Pizza on Woodruff Road. Stevie B’s will donate $1 for each person who mentions Langston. Rising sixth graders who have been accepted to Langston for next year are encouraged to come to Stevie B’s Spirit Night and meet some of their new classmates. 

Eighth Grade Rafting Trip – The Langston whitewater rafting trip for eighth graders is Friday, April 26. Students will leave from the school at 7:30 a.m and return to school at 5 p.m..  Cost is $20. Contact Matt Griffin at 864-286-9700 with any questions. 

Community Service Day – Langston sixth and seventh graders will participate in Community Service Day on Friday, April 26. Instead of reporting to school, students will go out into the community and serve in various capacities of their choosing. Contact Kelly Weekes at 864-286- 9700 for more info or if you are an organization seeking help.

Science Summer Camps – Lego Robotics, Lego Sumo, Beginning Rockets and Insect Collecting summer camps will be offered at Langston this summer. Cost is $80 — $100 for each week-long day camp with a one-time registration fee of $25. Camps are open to all area rising 4th – 8th graders and class size is limited. Advanced Writing Class for High School Students – A SAT and college prep advanced writing class is being offered this summer at Langston Charter Middle School for rising and current high school students. Cost is $125, plus a $25 registration fee; dates and times to be determined. The class is taught by Langston English teacher, Rachel Hamilton, and she may be contacted at rhamilton@langstoncharter.org.
