Shankin' It For a Good Cause

Like-minded souls combined to swing and sing for a good cause.

A visitor to on Sunday afternoon would never know that Shank's owner Robbie Biershenk was able to put the charity event for the Boys Home of the South together in less than a week.

With an assist from Carolina Shaved Ice owner Jason Crawley and local band The Piedmont Boys, things came together quickly.

"I saw Robbie mention something about having an event on his Facebook page and I called him and asked what I could do to make it happen," Crawley said.

"I was raised in a good home and I know not everyone was that lucky," Biershenk said. "So I wanted to do something to help the boys. I got a lot of help from other people and the City of Mauldin was real cooperative too."

Greg Payne, lead singer of The Piedmont Boys, who performed at the event, did not hesitate when asked to participate by Biershenk, who is also a fan of the band. "We were happy to do it," Payne said. "It's a good time, great weather and kid-friendly. We don't play a lot of venues that are kid-friendly, so this was perfect."

Visitors paid $10 and got to hit unlimited balls, take part in some golf-related competitions (putting contest, closest to the pin, and longest drive) and, of course, enjoy some Southern Rock courtesy of The Piedmont Boys.

There's already talk of another charity event, so stay tuned.
