Tampa Takes Southeastern Slugfest at Miracle League Field

First event to host wheelchair softball teams from throughout the Southeast

More than 60 players from five wheelchair softball teams descended on Mauldin’s Miracle League Field on Saturday for the .

Teams from Tampa, Charlotte, Atlanta and Nashville visited the host Mauldin Maulers for the double-elimination tournament.

Tampa was the class of the competition, getting through undefeated and beating Charlotte, 10-0 in the championship game.

Though the Maulers were eliminated early, the tournament will be counted as a success, as many participants were impressed with the custom-designed field in Sunset Park.

“The parking, the lights, the fence, the surface, it’s the whole package,” said Tampa’s manager Shayne Wilkerson, whose squad was playing on the field for the first time.

Other players said they were happy that such a facility is within driving distance, as traveling to wheelchair-friendly fields across the country can get costly.

The Southeastern Slugfest was a prelude to the National Tournament, which will be held in Omaha, Neb., next month, where Tampa will be a favorite to win their division.
